The executioner stands behind the saint's shoulder and plunges the short sword into Justina's breast. Her eyes are already cast toward Heaven, as in the story. In the background is the marble bridge where she was arrested.
On the right, a young aristocrat appears to be giving the order for the execution. His garb seems more appropriate to the count who ordered the execution of Justina of Antioch than to the emperor who presided in Padua. Similarly, the turbans on the left and the executioner's Phrygian cap could have been influenced by images of the martyrdom in Antioch, a more "oriental" locale than Padua.
